Daniella woke Tracy after just a few hours of fitful sleep. Tracy nursed her and changed her. All the while she smelled the aroma of coffee brewing—and bacon. When she brought Daniella downstairs, Vera immediately got up from the table and took the baby.

“There she is,” Vera said. “There’s my angel.”

Faz stood at the stove flipping bacon, a frying pan on another burner and a bowl of scrambled eggs ready to be cooked. He had a red-and-white checked towel draped over his shoulder, and his reading glasses rested on the tip of his nose. He looked like an enormous fry cook in some greasy-spoon diner.

Rex and Sherlock had taken an immediate liking to Faz—or to the smell of the bacon. They sat in the kitchen staring up at him with an expectant look.

Tracy knew neither Vera nor Faz had slept much. They didn’t arrive at the house until after one o’clock in the morning. Thankfully, the weather had held and there had been no additional snow. The three of them had stayed up another hour before Vera convinced them all to go to bed and start again in the morning.

Vera sat at the kitchen table talking to Daniella, nursing coffee, and eating toast with some of Dan’s homemade jam. Faz peeled out a copy of the sports section and handed Tracy the rest of the newspaper. “Nearly froze to death just walking to the mailbox to get the paper,” he said from behind bloodshot eyes. His face looked splotchy, and a couple of scars remained visible from the beating he had endured, but otherwise he looked like the same old Faz—a bodyguard you’d expect to find in one of the Godfather movies.

Tracy had no doubt Faz had nearly frozen, given his traditional attire—slacks, a loose-fitting bowling shirt, and leather loafers the snow would destroy before he reached the end of the driveway. Dan had an extra pair of boots that would likely fit, but she hoped Faz had at least brought a warm coat. At six foot four and more than 250 pounds, there was no hope he’d fit in one of Dan’s.

“How’d you sleep?” Vera asked Tracy.

“Not great. How about you? Was the bed big enough?” Faz and Vera had slept in the queen-size bed in the guest room, which had been Therese’s room.

“It was fine,” Vera said.

“Fine for you,” Faz said. “You’re a twig. Me? I felt like a sardine.”

“You snored like one,” Vera said. “The bed was fine, Tracy. Have some coffee and breakfast.”

Tracy reached for the pot. “Decaffeinated?”

“Of course,” Vera said. “You can’t have caffeine when you’re breastfeeding.”

“Yeah, well I may look like I can breastfeed, but I ain’t,” Faz said. “So where do I find the caffeinated coffee. Otherwise I’m going to be asleep at the table.”

After eating breakfast, Vera excused herself to put Daniella down for her morning nap. Tracy brought a plate of food to the officer in the car watching the house, then joined Faz at the kitchen table.

“Fill me in,” Faz said.
